Hi everyone,

I would just like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new Golf Manager.

My name is Pierre van Vuuren and I am very excited to start my journey here at De Zalze, I have always been a fan of the De Zalze experience in the past and I hope to spend many happy years at De Zalze Golf Club.

My love for the game started at age 13 and since then, golf has taken me to some special places and helped me make many friends around the world.

I started out at Zwartkop Country Club in Pretoria and have since worked at Westchester Hills in New York, The Polo Club of Boca Raton in Florida, Pearl Valley and Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate.

Your new Golf Manager: Pierre van Vuuren

The experience I have from working at these great clubs will come in very handy here at De Zalze as your Golf Manager. I am very excited to join Alfie and his team, as I hope to improve on the experience and culture they have here at De Zalze.

My wife Xenia and I are very happy to be back in the Cape. This is where we met and got married, so it was obviously a very easy move for us. Like most people, I love sport and my favourite teams are Manchester United and the Bulls, yes, the Bulls, so please do not hold that against me!

I can't wait to meet you all in the near future and of course, to hit the fairways with you soon.

Pierre

The next Sundowner event takes place on Friday 20 October. Galloway is involved as the supplier who will present a fun competition after the golf. As usual, golfers can enjoy pizzas (compliments of Redz Properties) and wines from Ernie Els. Book your tee-off time with the Pro Shop!

Friday Nights Live, has now come to an end for the season, but we are celebrating the month of October with a proper Oktoberfest, including complimentary Stellenbrau Craft Beer and a German Buffet Menu for R95 per person. Don’t miss out on this evening with Live Music from Blair Taberer, lots of prizes and fun! Bookings can be made at the restaurant.

Our Wine Ambassader for October is Ken Forrester Vinyards.

Join them for a glass of wine on 11 and 25 October between 16:00 – 18:00 on the terrace, before the Tarentale Prize-giving. They are also running a promotion on their wines for the month of October, as displayed in the front of the menu. The waiters enjoyed their wine training session with Bianca from Ken Forrester, and are ready to assist you with your choice of wine.

  Rules of Golf: Water Hazards
I had a few members ask me about water hazards as they were unsure at times whether they were in or outside the hazard lines.

As per the definitions of water hazards and lateral water hazards in the Rules of Golf, stakes or lines used to define the margins of a water hazard must be yellow and, in the case of lateral water hazards, they must be red.

Stakes or lines, or a combination of stakes and lines can be used to define the margins of water hazards. A ball is in a water hazard when it lies in or any part of it touches the water hazard.

When stakes and lines are used, it will be easy for the golfer to determine if they are in the hazard or not. When only stakes are used for definition, like we do at De Zalze, a straight line from stake to stake along the outside edge of the stakes at ground level, determines the limit of the hazard and not the edge of the water or river.

If you need any help with your rules, feel free to collect a rule book from the Pro Shop or go onto the app store to download the rules app on the app store.

Exposing the challenges as you go up

Last week we highlighted the challenge of increasing inconsistency of the distance hit with each Iron as you go up the set.

If you’ve bought the latest technology but you’ve still got a problem with inconsistency,
then here’s where the problem might lie.

Great social experiences are important for wellbeing

Research tells us that work pressure, business travel, and the smartphone are dramatically reducing the amount of time we invest in social interaction. The same research correlates that decline with the increase in stress, tension, and depression.

Play more golf. Make more friends. Take part in more social events. You should be living. And hitting a golf ball,
with friends who enjoy the moment with you, is living.
