Dear Member,

It is hard to believe that spring is around the corner. We can honestly say that we did not experience a very cold winter and it puts us in good stead to bring the courses back to that lush green we all enjoy. We will be starting spring treatment soon on both courses which includes:

- Scarifying fairways – this is done to remove dead material and encourage new growth. This process will not be invasive due to the uncertainty of when we will see our first rain.

- Top dressing (Compost) tees – It levels out the tees a bit, encourages growth of grass and decomposition of thatch material.

- Solid tining of the greens – towards end of September. The greens will be dusted and then tined with 10mm spike. This will recover within a week and should not impact on play as much as a full hollow-tining.

We would like our members to please note that this is the worst time of the year for our greenkeeping team to manage the courses. There is a lot of preparation that is done for growing season to ensure we achieve the best results but it also means that areas of the course looks “scruffy” as grass starts to grow. The growth is generally very sporadic and can look as if it was not cut.

It is a great time of the year to play golf, so don’t miss out on teeing it up.

Happy Golfing!

Regards
Francois

Many thanks to everybody who have paid for their Captain’s Dinner. If you have not yet booked your place, please do so immediately as tickets are limited and bookings close on Monday. Contact info@randpark.co.za or 011 215 8600 to make your reservation. Please note this is a men’s only event.

We have made a few changes in the men’s locker room as part of the long term upgrade. We took a decision to remove the soap bars and replace it with a multi-purpose shower gel. One of the main reasons for taking this step is due to the soap bars being unhygienic when shared. The new foam gel can be used as shower gel and shampoo which is much better quality than what was provided before. We trust that this change will be seen as an enhancement for all members.

The Open Foursomes event is next Sunday and is definitely not to be missed! If you would like to learn patience while playing golf then this is the tournament for you. We have had the new GPS system on our carts for a week now and I am very impressed so far. There is nothing better than being able to touch the screen for an accurate distance to a specific point and also receiving the distance to the middle of the green from that point. We hope you are enjoying the new system!

TIP OF THE WEEK
With the handicap system updating each night at midnight, it is of the utmost importance that you double check your handicap before teeing off. Although we display your handicap on the slip when you pay, it is still best to also confirm your handicap on the HNA terminals provided at the Club. This can prevent you from being disqualified for playing off the incorrect handicap.

This Saturday is the President’s Cup which is an individual stableford competition. Last year it was won on a score of 43 points so bring your A-game!

Good luck to our betterball teams playing this weekend!

No equipment needed.

Course Management: Firethorn, 4th hole - A straight par 5, it is always best to hit your tee shot up the right-hand side of the fairway as it slopes towards the left. Once you have managed to hit your tee shot in the fairway you will once again need to play your second shot towards the right, but beware of the sneakily positioned fairway bunker about 60 meters short of the green. You will need to choose a club that will help you play short of the bunker or be brave and play it over the bunker. A well-guarded green with greenside bunkers, it is important that your approach shot is played to the heart of the green. As the green slopes from back to front it is important to leave your approach shot slightly short and right of the flag to allow for an easy uphill right to left putt for birdie.

Have a great weekend!
The Randpark Team

Rescue and recover a golfer

We need your help. Most of you will know an ex-golfer. Someone who fell out of love with the game.
Maybe it was a struggle, they were pressured for time, or family commitments made it difficult.
But in many cases they’ve gone over to the dark side.

So many who take up running or cycling move on to double marathons, extreme cycle races,
or, even worse, Iron Mans or Triathlons. But you can save them.

And if we can help, then please contact your PGA Professional. If you have a group we’d be happy to arrange a special clinic, or even accompany you on your round to help your recovering golfers find fulfillment from the game.
