Time out at St Francis Links is simply good for the soul!

AB and KG led the way in Port Elizabeth after a little time-out on the Links. 12 of the Proteas including coaches came directly from Durban to us in preparation for their next Test in PE. Maybe some reflection, a break from everything, some great food at Mauro's and the next night on the fire, in a laid back environment, was all they needed.

We had a little Shoot-out in the 4th when they arrived, played the course on Tuesday (some played as much as time allowed) both with the intent to put them all in a good space. On Tuesday, the boys played golf in beautiful conditions (light easterly). Coach drove it to 80m from the pin on the last and he and his partner, Dale Blankenstein took first prize by one as we all watched from the grass terrace above the green. John Hay saw us and asked if Zac could meet his idol, AB; there was much more in store for Zac as he met the team and got his bat signed by all. Class.

Chef Jon prepared the food needed for the braai and the boys got stuck into a great meal and some good story-telling around the fire. For the second time, Steve Emary shared his home on the 4th for what turned out to be a great couple of days.

It appears to have worked as AB achieved what no one else could - 100+ on a pitch that was defeating others. Kagiso Robada was on fire after Charl and I had a word with him on the field Friday (we actually exchanged nice greetings) and he went out in the afternoon session and took 5 wickets in some 18 deliveries. We went on to win the match - it just proves, once again, that St Francis Links just gets everybody in a good space!

The coaches, Ottis and Dale took the cash - Our Assistand Sup Danny got the team picture he wanted

Young Zac met his hero and all the boys signed his bat!

Greensomes over 18 holes

The greensomes will take any partnership to its limits. You must be able to put up with the bad shot and create something of nothing. This year the format proved its value once again, as our members could compete against one another in the alternate shot format.

Congratulations to all the prize winners of the Greensomes 2018:

3rd - Norman Dyer & Geoff Garratt 34 pts
2nd - Dave Hart & Svein Stiansen 34 pts
1st - John Wilson & Pete Maskew 39 pts

New Champions, Pete Maskew and John Wilson

Our last get-together was on March 9th - We provided the members in attendance with updates on our tasks at hand!

Mr and Mrs Fuchs joined me in presenting the way forward for re-cycling. The show of hands indicated a strong positive response for providing the service to our residents. It involves obtaining a skip that will be based at the maintenance area for the members to drop off their recycling itens in clear bags that will be available for puchase (at cost) in the Pro Shop. The only charge will be for the skip and the transporting. This amount will be shared by the participating residents. A mail will follow with the details.

In other news, interested parties read the hard copy of the SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Energy) plan and shared their comments. This will be finalized soonest. Next month, Jonathon Hodgson from Specialized Solar Sysyems will be here to present valuable information about green solutions. Glovent hardware has approved by the Board - this concludes nearly a year's worth of investigation into the best tools for communication to our members. It will also provide the mechanism for the homeowners to take responsibility for their guests and service providers through the APP. SMS's with pincodes will replace phone calls and cards. A number of members were taken by Kevern to the Impophu Dam for and educational.  Norman Dyer shared the members' thanks for the trip. Property clearing will commence soon as we have pruchased a powerful chipper. This will enable property owners to remove Slangbos, Blombos and Bitou from their vacant stands for a fraction of the cost. We will intially be creating larger firebreaks on the north west boundary of the Estate, before starting with the plots. There is a good possibility that the chipper may be a viable solution for homeowner garden refuse as well (watch this space). Bart Logie will be launching his 10th book at a special launch at 6pm on Monday, 2 April and Clive Horlock will be presenting an updated version of Walking with the Bushmen with an accompanying African meal on 20 March at 7pm.

Our first Property Owner Forum will be hosted by our homeowner Dirsctors, Tim Elliott, Norman Dyer and Chris Kelway on March 27. This is your opportunity to share ideas and concerns for the Board before their next meeting in early May.

Club News centers on the growth of golf as experienced another record month on the links. Internationals from all over the world joined our members and locals, bringing nearly 2500 rounds in February. Thus number is up slightly on last year. Golfers came from Austraila, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and Zimbabwe. Oh, they also came from all of SA! That makes 22 countries that we know of! Wow, pretty cool, hey!

Next get-together - April 12

It finished on Thursday the 26th, leaving no time for practice or course preparation. I apologize and the Champs will return to the last week in April in years to come.

Lift will play a significant part in getting your next flight off the ground. Back spin
generates lift for your golf ball, but how much is too much for you?

Peter Kostis, in a Golf.com instruction piece using Paul Casey, highlighted how
much improvement Casey had made by concentrating not on the latest swing gimmicks but,
but on the good old-fashioned setup and fundamentals.

This article shows Casey’s whole swing in pictures, but take special note of his perfect posture at setup.

Last week we asked you tell us why you think most golfers don’t concentrate on their setup
anywhere near as much as the very best golfers do. This week we’re challenging you to
answer that question for yourself. Is your alignment and posture good enough to give
you a chance of making a good shot? Not sure?
