Hello everyone!

I know everyone is talking about the rain, but WOW! There was plenty! Over 60mm at the club in less than a week. The Western Province dams are fast approaching 50% full and the snow is clearly visible on the mountains from the 10th tee. Fantastic news!

The Harry Solomon League

All that rain did mean very little golf was played over the weekend when comparing the rounds to normal. The Harry Solomon League side did play, however, It was the semi-final against Milnerton and as I alluded to last week, these guys are tough competition. Things were all square as the final group came up the last hole. A sizeable crowd had gathered to watch the final putts. The Milnerton player had a 35 foot putt for birdie and to everyone’s amazement (and disappointment), he sank the putt! The game ended all square and Westlake were eliminated due to being lower placed in the log prior to the game, but not without one heck of a fight. Well done to all the players in the side this year. You held our name high and let’s hope we go one further in 2019 and win the final.

Premier League and First Challenge

Speaking of Leagues, the sheets are out in the foyer for the Premier League and First Challenge. If you are interested in playing, please put your names down. The first games are in August.

Soccer World Cup

The World Cup has entered the business end of the competition now as the Quarterfinals start on Friday. Friday is also our R10K draw. We have decided to join the 2 and have a festive evening with some amazing deals. We have managed to secure 70 complimentary Budweiser beers (They are an official World Cup sponsor) and the first 70 people who join us for a meal will receive a complimentary beer. The meals in question look delicious, are very competitively priced and can be seen here. Table bookings can be made directly with Westlake Kitchen. Saturday is the second day of Quarterfinal action and the ribs and pizzas will be on sale too.

Important Notice

The re-tiling of the men’s downstairs toilet, necessitated by the installation of our waterless urinals, is coming along well. It should be done by the weekend. Well done to Nick Bold and his team for a job well done!

The Westlake Foursomes

The Westlake Foursomes is on Sunday 15th July. Cost is R350 per person for 36 holes including food. Entries close this Friday the 6th July, so please contact Emelia to book your place.

Greenkeepers Revenge

Greenkeepers Revenge is coming up on the 27th July. It was real fun last year with some crazy shots required and a day filled with laughter! Get your entries in with the office ladies. Cost is R110 for members and R310 for visitors and this includes a light meal.

Give yourself a Bell's!

A further reminder that we still have a Bells limited edition TaylorMade golf bag up for grabs. Every time you buy a Bells, your entry goes into the box and we will be holding the draw soon. So, as the ad goes, “give that man (or lady) a Bell's!”. Enjoy your Bells with the added bonus that you could be a winner!

Course update

On the course, Raymond and his team have turned their attention to the greens. A lot of pitch marks are not being repaired correctly and as a result, the grounds staff are being forced to put in plugs where players simply pat down a bad pitch mark, leaving a sandy circle. The correct procedure is to take a pitchfork and loosen up the area around the pitch mark, pushing the surrounding grass inwards so that the area is once again covered with grass, then patting down gently. Please ensure you assist anyone playing with you who does not know or does this incorrectly, as this exercise is extremely time-consuming for the greens staff and quite unnecessary if everyone repairs their pitch mark correctly. Another clear problem is on greens where cart paths go around the back of the green and a pin placing is near the rear of the green. Many pitch marks on the front of the green do not get repaired on these greens. Please take the time to go and check where your ball pitched and repair the mark. Thanks for your assistance with this – it takes all of us to solve this problem.

California State Open

Finally, the California State Open concluded on Sunday at Maderas Golf Club in the U.S. Our very own Andre De Decker had a very impressive performance on the tough track, which provided a stern test. He rounded out day four with a 1-under par 71, which put him at 11-under 277 for the tournament and gave him a 3-shot victory! His week included a first round 63, which tied Charley Hoffman’s course record! Well done Andre!

On that note, have a fantastic weekend and go out there and shoot your best round ever!

Please support the bar this weekend too and enjoy the World Cup games. We love the rain, but it isn’t great for business.

Cheers,
David and the Team
