Greetings From Your DGC Team | Bringing Your Club Closer

Winelands League

The Seniors' League team have played twice in the past month with mixed success. The first on 13 August, postponed from May, against Devonvale at Strand Golf Club provided an excellent 3-2 victory over a strong Devonvale team, League Winners for the past two years. With three new pairings, the lead pair of Suat Palanduz and TJ Lee cruised to a 2 up win, quickly followed by Gerald Muller and a very in form Deon Minnaar who won 3 and 2. Behind them, a chip in each on the back nine from Mike Rolfe and Gordon Simmons, together with a superb birdie at the long Par 3 17th at Strand from Gordon, helped them to the crucial win that secured the team victory no matter what the remaining two pairs did.

Greg Baxter and Jan Horn (making his debut), kindly stepped in at short notice when late changes were needed, but couldn't add to the lead, nor could Peter Seward and Bert Vos despite yet another brave fightback from behind.

With a game in hand over most teams, Durbanville looked forward to playing Helderberg at the much changed Somerset West course on 04 September. With yet more changes to the team necessary due to a combination of unavailability and loss of form, the most interesting talking point beforehand was how the new Slope system might affect Course Handicaps and the consequent results. The fact that Durbanville were disappointingly beaten 31/2 - 11/2 didn't really provide any answers! The matches were played in a howling gale and all but one went to the final hole.

Suat and TJ went to the 18th hole one up, but couldn't quite hang on for the win. Mike and Gordon had defeat snatched from the jaws of victory as an opponent drained an outrageous putt from off the back of the final green, before Neil Rix and Jan Horn also lost one down on the 18th. John Kirby and Peter Seward were three down at the turn and were never able to recover. The final pairing of Gavin van de Merwe and Gerald Muller secured the only victory of the day with a one up win, again on the 18th.

With both Bellville and Parow surprisingly losing, the chance to close the gap on the leaders was missed. However, with the two top teams yet to be faced, Durbanville aren't mathematically out of winning the League this year, though we would be wholly dependent on other results going our way. With a full complement from whom to select for the next match in October, we shall remain very competitive.

Member Profile | Alf Walls

Throughout his life, Alf has participated in many forms of sport although football was his passion, turning out for Hartleyvale and Goodwood in his teens and early 20's. He played scrum half for Observatory Rugby team. The past 15 years of his sporting prowess has been devoted to DGC. His objective on the first tee is to break 100 which he often does. Maybe one day he will shoot his age. He is often in the prizes and hasn’t lost his competitiveness.

He was married to his wife Patricia for over 40 years until her passing some 15 years ago. He has 2 adult daughters in Cape Town who visit him on a weekly basis whilst his son is a school principal in Tasmania.

On behalf of Durbanville Golf Club Senior Society, we would like to wish Alf many more years of health and hope that he continues to grace our fairways for some time to come. He is a true gentleman and an asset to our golf club.

Noah places Top 3 in SA Kids Junior Africa Challenge
27th Aug – 31st August 2018

Noah Musikanth had a challenging and character building week at the SA Kids Junior Africa Challenge held at San Lameer.

After day one and some ups and downs Noah was lying 10th going into the 2nd round. Noah started strong on Day 2 but struggled toward the end. He did however gain some ground and went into Day 3 in 5th position. He showed his commitment and character throughout the 3rd day and played well, just losing out to 2nd place and placing 3rd overall in his age category.

These are all building blocks and we are proud of you Noah!

Dear Members,

As Match and Handicap, I hope that all members are familiar with the new Slope Rating changes that have been introduced from the 3rd September. The most important thing to know is that on the night of the 2nd September 2018, your handicap has been converted to a handicap index. When you play a round of golf, the handicap index will be converted to a course handicap which will be calculated on the course and tee selected.

Importantly, men and ladies are welcome to play off any of the tees at the club and a new scorecard is available to display the new strokes, as well as the slope and course ratings, all of which were provided by GolfRSA.

Please remember that the aim of the changes are to allow golfers of differing abilities to compete against each other more fairly and also to provide more choices in terms of the courses played. Click here for more information about the changes to be introduced.

Yours in golf,
Mathew Herbert

  Congratulations, Bob Rees!

On The Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland last month, Bob Rees took part in the St Andrews Golf Club’s 175th Anniversary Medal Competition which had a strong field of 240 players. Bob won the B Division (8 to 12 handicaps) with a Gross score of 77 to win by two strokes. His 77 beat all but 16 of the A Division players (110 in total) and he had the lowest nett score (67) of anybody in the field.

Bob is seen here on the 17th Tee of the Old Course - the famous Road Hole - where you have to drive over the sheds to hit the fairway. He was pleased to manage it and walk off with a Par 4!

This is just proof that you’re never too old to learn and improve! Well done Bob Rees; we are so proud of you.

“You should play a driver with more loft.” It’s a nice generalisation.
But that’s what it is: a generalisation.
If you want the most improvement from a new driver,
then come and get fitted. Let’s create the right launch conditions.

Here’s a golfer who bought a driver off the shelf.
And here’s his performance after he was fitted properly.

Despite playing the latest technology, it took just 20 minutes to find an extra 21 metres,
by LOWERING the launch angle. In this case, spin was also lowered.

There’s a driver DNA – ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate. We need to match those when fitting you for a driver.
How close is your driver to your Launch DNA now? Do you have 20 metres or more of performance in the right DNA?
Come and see us. Let’s unlock your potential to thrill.

Make bounce your friend. Learn how to use the bounce on
your wedge and you’ll lower your scores.

Using the bounce on your wedge makes golf easier, more fun, you’ll play with more confidence,
and open up a variety of greenside shots.

You’ll read a lot on what bounce you should have on your wedges, but what’s the point of having ‘bounce’ if you’re not taking advantage of it? You’re missing out on a better short game.

There’s bounce on your wedges for a reason. Do you know if you’re using yours to improve your consistency and control? It’s time to improve.
