League

Firstly, a huge thank you to all our League players participating and representing Reading Country Club.

No more building teams - next year we want to perform at an even higher level - we have enough golfers to participate in all the league categories.

Our aim is to have consistent team members and build proper team spirit.

Speaking of team spirit - the Handicap and Senior League Players will convene on Monday the 24th September early in the morning for a healthy 18 hole challenge and then we are going to braai.

Perhaps we will take the best 8 from the two teams and challenge the Scratch League guys.

Course update

The course and especially the fairways received the first spring treatment and we should see growth and green soon.

That is what has been said - after the Boks win - everything will turn green now...

Another word of thanks to Frank Booth and Gavin Jackson who staked a lot of trees around the course - now for the ground staff to water the trees. Frank and Gavin dedicated their time already to looking at more tree planting opportunities and keep them alive.

Seniors’ Results for the week ended 14th September 2018

Tuesday the 11th of September was time for a Four-Ball Alliance Stableford with 2 to count. This was the third time we played under the new handicap system with most of the players being cut a shot or two. This was probably reflected in the rather low scores recorded. In first place with 86 points were Hennie Aucamp, Pieter Schoeman, Jan Bloem, and Paul Coetzee. In second place were Mark Henderson, Gert Scheepers, John Gisbey, and Tommy O’Connor with 83 points. The team of Dave Ford, Jimmy Wood, Allan Irvine, and Nic Loizides managed to come third with 82 points on a count out. Glen Hattingh scored an impressive gross of 84 whilst Allan Irvine and Willie Doman shared the best net with 68. Jan Bloem was nearest the pin on the 5th and Jimmy Wood on the 11th hole. Only one 2 club was claimed. The monthly draw for the Boerie rolls was won by Norman Glenister, Carol Paterson, Eric Ross and Colin Tucker.

On Thursday the 13th of September we played an Individual Stableford with overall scores showing an improvement from Tuesday. Eric Ross was first with 38 points followed by Frank Mullen with 37 points. In third place, on a count out, was Blandyna Babski with 36 points with Gerrie Rabie taking fourth place with the same score. Norman Glenister recorded the best gross of 85 and Mark Henderson and Eric Ross shared the best net of 67. Johann Hammer was nearest the pin on the 7th hole and Norman Glenister on the 15th. There were no 2 clubs. Free games were won by Chris Spangenberg and Pieter van Aswegen

Yours in golf,
Dave Ford.

Reminder of the Junior Competitions coming up

Firstly, we will be hosting Monthly Junior Golf Competitions that will also form part of a Junior Series and order of merit rankings. Please book at the Pro Shop on 011 907 3666. We encourage all our juniors to try and attend these events as it’s a great chance to get to know the other juniors and develop their playing skills.

Next Junior Competition: Sunday 14 October

Lastly, the regional Ekurhuleni Junior Golf Tournaments are a great opportunity for our juniors to develop their tournament skills and experience playing on all the different courses in Ekurhuleni! The top players in these tournaments at the end of the year receive their regional Ekurhuleni colours and get to compete in the interprovincial tournament. They have to play at least 8 tournaments in the year to qualify and there are teams selected for u/13, u/15, u/17, u/18.

Next tournament: 23 September at State Mines G.C

Please contact us to register your son/daughter for the Ekurhuleni tournaments.

To all our juniors and parents, we are here to help in any way we possibly can. Feel free to come chat to us as we love to see our junior golfers shine and enjoy playing this amazing game! See you on the course!

The weekend is just a few days away and straight after it, Monday 24th September is Heritage Day. Reading bowls section is having a Family Fun Day commencing at 9.00 a.m. Remember to bring sunscreen and hats, and also ensure that you and your family stay hydrated. It’s going to be hot. This is the day that the Reading bar staff come dressed in their traditional outfits and always look stunning. Something to look forward to.

But before the weekend, it’s the Joker Jackpot draw this Friday evening. If you turn the Joker, you will go home with a not-to-be-sneezed-at amount of approximately R80 000. If ticket sales this week are anywhere close to a fortnight ago when sales topped R10 000, the previous jackpot of R75 000 will definitely be over the R80 000 mark. Prior to this draw at 18.30 is the weekly Barrel of Fortune draw which is also building up nicely. In both instances, you must be present in the bar to claim your prize. Your friends and family are most welcome.

With just a couple of club comps to be finalised, the date for prize giving has been set for Sunday 21st October 2018. A date for your diary.

See you in the sun,
Sandra

Many better players have a lower trajectory with a slight draw; and lots of run out.
While they may be consistent; the challenges of the hole, rough, trees, bunkers and water;
often get the better of them because of their longer run-out.

The extra 19 metres matter. They turn #5 iron approach shots into #7 irons.
But the 35-metre improvement in carry distance will allow the driver to be used on more holes,
turning #4 irons into #7 irons. That’s a game-changer.

There’s a Driver DNA – ball speed, launch angle, & spin rate. We need to match those when fitting you for a Driver.
How close is your Driver to your Launch DNA now? Do you have 20 metres or more of performance in the right DNA?
Come and see us. Let’s unlock your potential to thrill.

Hitting chip and pitch shots closer, more often, is easier when you’re consistently striking the ball cleanly.
Bounce is designed to make that easier to achieve.

Without bounce, if you strike the ground, slightly behind the ball, then the leading edge would dig
into the turf or sand quickly, and the ball will go nowhere.

With bounce there’s no digging. It acts as a skid plate sliding through the grass and under the ball.
The strike doesn’t have to be so precise to get a great result.

Learning how to use your bounce will increase forgiveness on chip and pitch shots.
It will also increase the range of greenside shots you can play. Your confidence improves, whatever type of lie.

Remove anxiety when playing chip and pitch shots, especially when playing off a tight lie.
By the way, less anxiety means more relaxed muscles and a better stroke.
Learn to use the forgiveness of your bounce. Eliminate those silly shots.
