Greetings from your DGC team | Bringing your club closer

  Dear Members,

With 2018 almost gone in a flash, we are only 56 days away from Christmas! So what has been the new for South Africa this year? We have welcomed Cyril Ramaphosa into power and have hoped to see a changing in the guard. State Owned Enterprises are under the spotlight once again for irregular spending and Cabinet Ministers are changing portfolios. We have welcomed the inclusion of Tito Mboweni back to the position of Minister of Finance. A position Trevor Manuel held for many years. Donald Trump continues on his way with the US markets exceeding expectations. However, it is not all doom and gloom and we not building a wall (well maybe to keep the South Easter at bay!)…

Lana and her team are ready to revitalise your game for the upcoming summer season and get all aspects of your game back into shape. Matthew, Paul and Lana are dedicated to making a difference in your game. Why not contact them now to book a lesson? We can see from our results in the Opens of just how well our juniors are doing and this is all credit to Pure Motion Golf Academy. We had many of our players selected to both Provincial and National Teams, and we are very proud of your Club and its members as we go from strength to strength. With a developing young Premier League side, our team performed excellently. This year we are not bringing home all the league trophies but we have a great base to build on.

The Pro Shop will be seeing some new fashion items delivery in November. Why not pop in and see what’s new? With Christmas around the corner we may just have that perfect gift you have been looking for! If you have something specific in mind we don’t currently stock, please talk to us as we may be able to assist you in finding that club or shirt at very competitive pricing.

PPK is around the corner and it is going to be an event not to be missed. There are limited tee-times available for the PPK Classic happening on Saturday, the 17th November. Should you be interested in joining us, please feel free to make contact with the club. You will be entertained from start to finish! The Friday Par 3 competition is also going to be something special and it is proudly sponsored by Wimpy Cape Gate. You will be playing from the balcony (maybe twice!) onto greens and there is a long drive competition with a twist, as well as nearest the pins prizes up for grabs and a light bite to eat and beer afterwards, along with live music from JUST ADRIAN. This is going to be Epic so don’t miss out!

The PPK week starts with the Rose Day and is filling up nicely. Bookings for the CSE Classic on the Wednesday opens this Wednesday and this popular event, with an evening meal, remains a highlight for our members. This will sell out quickly, so remember to book your space! The Senior Classic on Friday morning will also be popular, if you wish to enter this day please make contact with the club as the sheet is already filling up fast!

An auction will be held on the PPK Classic evening. Here we will be giving you an opportunity to bid on vouchers that could just possibly give you the best value you could ever imagine! From Hotel Accommodation from Premier Hotels and Resorts, to Golf and Accommodation from Langebaan Country Estate, to Arabella, Pearl Valley, Erinvale, Steenberg and De Zalze, there is much to bid for! Some vouchers include carts and they will all be valid for a year from the date of issue. We have also included options for you to play golf in places like Limpopo, San La Meer in Natal, Silver Lakes and Pretoria Country Club in Gauteng and more!

The Super Draw in December is one not to be missed, with a guaranteed cash giveaway of R15000.00. This is going to make one of you very happy as we will draw until we have given away a total of R15000.00! However, you have to be there to stand a chance of winning! There will also be live entertainment and lots of fun! Catering will be pulling out all the stops to make this an amazing event. Stay tuned via the newsletter, notice boards and via our Facebook page for the details coming soon and plan to get here early to secure your table and enjoy the festivities.

We have seen some staffing changes this year. Rosa, Philip and Celine have moved on and are moving on to bigger and better things. We wish them every success in their new endeavours. Congratulations to Jacqueline and Shauney who both received a bundle of joy in 2018. I am sure they are proud moms and we wish them the very best with this new journey.

A very big thank you must go to all our Sponsors. We cannot do what we do with their help. From Food and Beverage to Golf Course, these companies play a vital role in giving to you, the member, great value. Lastly a huge thank you to two aspects of our club. Firstly the Committee who dedicate their time to making Durbanville Golf Club the place to be, for always looking to give the membership the value they deserve and to create a sustainable club. Then to you, the Member, who give to DGC that special feeling of Community. We are after all one huge community looking out for each other so thank you for making us your destination of choice.

Yours in golf,
Sean Verdon
DGC’s General Manager

League Update

The Seniors' League recorded a fine 4.5 - 0.5 victory over Paarl at Helderberg last month, consolidating their position on the top half of the log. Suat Palanduz and TJ Lee continued their unbeaten run with an opening 4&3 victory. Behind them, Winston Heunis and Bob Rees came from 3 down after 10 holes to earn an honourable half. The remaining three pairs all secured excellent wins - Mike Rolfe and Gordon Simmons 3&1, Neil Rix and Bert Vos 5&3, Gavin van der Merwe and Gerald Muller 2&1.

The next match is at Durbanville vs Kuilsriver who lie second, whilst table topping Parow await us in the final match in December. Two wins could still see us win the league though many other results would have to go in our favour. Plenty still to play for.

DGC Member Profile: Eddie Locke

Eddie Locke born in Lambeth, London, England 1934
He was the youngest of 3 children. Educated in London up to the age of just 13 years (during WW2). He then left school and began working in the famous Fleet Street as a junior apprentice Lithographer for a national newspaper magazine. This became his lifetime profession until his retirement in 2000 at age 64.

He played football and Cricket in his spare time and always had a passion for physical health. Even today at 84 years of age he completes a full body workout, three days per week. He began bodybuilding in his teens and went on to compete both regionally and nationally in bodybuilding competitions, with great success at the highest level. He was trained by a local Circus Trapeze artist who expected nothing less than perfection.

September 1963 | September 2018

Eddie met his future wife, Capetonian, Jacqueline (standing next to him) at the Wimbledon Palais dance hall in 1954 just a few weeks after he completed his 2 years National army service. During his time in the army, he learned discipline and commitment to his fellow soldiers. He still has these traits today.

The two went on to marry in 1956 and then settled in Cape Town where they lived happily together for the next 59 years. Eddie worked for the Cape Times as a qualified Lithographer. Unfortunately Jacqueline passed away a couple of years ago. Eddie has a daughter, 2 Grandchildren and 2 Great-grandchildren.

Eddie has been a member of DGC for 47 years and still plays at least twice every week, in the senior society morning field. His lowest handicap was 12 and he is still very competitive off a 29 handicap. He was invited to join the club by Jack Sheen who was a foundation member. This was long before the first formal clubhouse was built.

It was before the club had a licence to serve alcohol to it’s members. That was until the then Prime Minister and later President of South Africa (B J Vorster) played a round of golf at DGC with his fellow politicians. After the game they had retire to the Oxford arms for a drink. The licence application was then fast tracked and issued two weeks later.

Eddie has a pleasant disposition both on and off the course. He always has a smile on his face and really enjoys his golf. He is as “fit as a fiddle” and has a six pack to be admired and envied by his fellow golfers. He also oversees the 9 hole mashie course out at Burgundy estate on the days that he doesn’t play at DGC.

Please join me in wishing Eddie Locke many more years of enjoyable golf and comradery with his fellow senior golfers.

WP Premier League

The Premier League went into the last game of the season needing a win against Westlake and some favourable results to stand a chance of winning the season and retaining the cup. Unfortunately, the team couldn't manage to beat the eventual winners of the league and ended finishing the season in fourth place. Well done to Sean Howell, Astin Owen and Sean Cronje who were the top three Durbanville players in the Leagues MVP list.

1st Challenge League

The 1st Challenge managed to half its final game of the season to finish the league in 2nd to last position. Although it was a difficult season for the inexperience team, there were many positives. For example, several of the Junior players who represented the team also representing the Premier League team during the course of the season and performed well at the highest level. Well done to Travis Procter, Louis Loubser and Joshua Wiese who were the MVPs.

3 Durbanville members in winning team

The Sages Mini Nationals were held over 2 days at Worcester with teams from as far away as East London, in Temperatures close to 40C. There were 30 4 man teams in the comp. WP haven't won the trophy since 2003 and had to wait till the last pair of Gerald Muller and Dave Isles came in to find out who won. The competition is 4 ball betterball stableford, and consists of 4 in a team so the scores for both pairs is added. On day one WP were joint top, and needed to score well on day 2, the pairing of Malcolm McDonald and Elroy Kleinveldt came in with 48 points day one, and 45 points day two. McDonald shooting 11 below his handicap over the 2 days. With all the scores in the last pair of Muller and Isles needed 40 points for WP to win and they duly obliged with 41 points.
