Manager’s News

 Dear Members,

The much awaited and hyped match between Phil and Tiger took place. The result in favour of Phil where flood lights, and extra holes were needed. Phil earned himself a cool 9 Million USD for this feat. Did it create the media attention and world attention it was intended for? Who knows, but Tiger is good for golf – Love him, hate him, but you cannot discount his impact on the world stage. Sadly his Ryder Cup 2018 was not as he was hoping for, especially after his win at the Fedex Cup final.

The year is winding down, and I never really understood why my parents were so excited that school was starting again. Holidays are almost upon us. My daughter is almost on holiday and the dreaded, “I am bored, Dad.” is about to become a reality once again. (Please let school start!) But on a serious note, our junior sections is one of the strongest in the Western Cape, we continue to see our juniors shine. With this in mind, the Junior PPK is on the 9th December 2018. Invitations have been sent out, should you wish to enter, please make contact with the club. A fun day, great competition and good rivalry will be on offer.

A huge thank you must go to all of our Sponsors who helped and contributed towards the success of the PPK week. It really was a magnificent week and we look forward to bringing you the 2019 event. To our staff who were here from early to late, who always had a smile on their faces and the attitude of nothing is too much, I extend to them my personal gratitude. Their dedication, enthusiasm and positive attitude towards everyone was simply amazing to see. Lastly, to our members who played, who joined in the festivities, we thank you for your participation. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

At the time of writing, our League Ladies are participating in two league finals, with winds and possible rain on offer, we know they will shine bright. We have sent bubbles along in anticipation of two trophies, but we have also sent bubbles along for simply making it all the way to the finals. We are so very proud of your achievements. The Section continues to grow and go from strength to strength, the KWV mixed continues to simply get better and better, please join us for these events.

I would like to extend to Inus and Helene Marais a huge thank you – the new rules from GolfRSA has certainly kept them busy, along with new local rules which will be launched in 2019. They have been instrumental in the role out/education of this process. It has meant many many hours away from home on the road, going from province to province helping committees, members, club managers, directors of golf and tour players gain a better understanding of what is to come. They will be rolling out information sessions at DGC in January, aimed at league, but all our members are welcome to participate, the more you know, the more enjoyable your golf will be. Please watch the notice boards for details. Kindly see the videos in this newsletter with helpful videos.

Yours in golf,
Sean Verdon

Senior's Society News

League Update
In their must-win, penultimate Seniors' League match of the season, Durbanville secured probably their best result of the season in trouncing Kuilsriver without losing a game. Playing at home and thus determining tee choice, Durbanville opted for the longer White Tees, their familiarity with which undoubtedly made a difference as most other clubs in the League prefer to play off Blue/Forward tees.

Once again Suat Palanduz and TJ Lee got us off to a flying start with another comprehensive win, 4&3. Behind them, both the Winston Heunis/Bob Rees and Mike Rolfe/Gordon Simmons partnerships came from behind to halve their matches. These three results left us needing just one win from the final two matches in which Neil Rix and Bert Vos won comfortably 2&1 whilst Gavin van der Merwe and Gerald Muller, having clearly recovered from their disappointing loss in the Seniors Matchplay due to a handicap misunderstanding, thrashed their opponents 6&5.

Durbanville have leapfrogged both Kuilsriver and Bellville to now lie third in the table just a point behind the holders, Devonvale, and Parow whom we play in the final match of 2018. A win for Durbanville and a loss or draw for Devonvale should see us win the League for the first time in many years.

SAGES Sanlam CANSA Challenge
On Monday 12th November our Senior Society welcomed a large group of visiting Boland SAGES from clubs as far afield as Langebaan, Worcester, Robertson, Paarl, Strand and several other affiliated courses in the Western Cape.

This is our second edition of what is becoming an annual challenge. In total we had 152 players which made up the two teams of 76 players each. The competition was on a betterball stableford format with prizes sponsored by SANLAM under the banner of Sanlam CANSA Challenge.

This event proved to be very lucrative, for both, Durbanville GC (86 visitors green fees, golf cart hire, halfway house & drinks from the bar) and the CANSA Association who raised R17,000 from their Wine auction and raffle.

Some of our visitors had to leave home at 05h00 to drive to Durbanville in time for their early morning tee time. On arrival we had complimentary Coffee, Danish pastries, Muffins and Old Brown Sherry. This gesture was very well received by our visiting players.

The SAGES players’ came dressed in their iconic sky blue outfits and were met by the Steel blue outfits of our Senior Society. Each match consisted of a pair of SAGES versus a pair from DGC seniors. Although each pair were competing for the betterball prizes, the main objective was, for their score to assist their team to win the overall challenge.

After much scrutiny and recounts the final score was determined. SAGES 1,444 stableford points v DGC Seniors 1,446 so for the first time in 2 years of this event DGC came out on top albeit only 2 points difference overall.

What is more important is that our club benefited from the full field whilst CANSA received much needed funding to help continue their amazing work in the field of cancer research and treatment. Also and most importantly, a great day was had by all. Our visitors went away with warm feelings towards "The Jewel of the North".
