Ekurhuleni Open

First of all, a huge thank you to the members for allowing this tournament to take place last week. All 160 players have left Reading with only good things to say.  Hopefully, in time, this will turn into golf rounds and maybe even some memberships.

To all my staff who were involved in the various aspects, thank you very much for your efforts. For the record, 13 under par won the tournament and the winner was Jayden Schaper, the country’s No 1 amateur.

To our members who played, well done to Hein Dreyer and Lingum Pillay for making the cut on Saturday evening.

Joker Jackpot Draw

Please remember and diaries the Joker Jackpot draw on Friday evening, the 11th October. The Jackpot is currently on just R5500.00, so come and join us and stand a chance to win this. We will also be doing the Barrel of Fortune draw, which currently stands on R7100.00.

Spring Treatment

This week on Monday (7th), Sean did the spring treatment and hopefully with a bit of rain soon, the course will be in its full glory soon. Many questions get asked around the spring treatment and unfortunately, it is one of those necessary evils to ensure the longevity of the golf course.

Preferred Lies

Just another reminder that as from the 1st October, there are no more preferred lies (More commonly known as placing) on the golf course. The only time it will be permitted, is if weather conditions warrants it. This will be decided upon by our greenkeeper and in consultation with Donovan and myself.

That’s all from me this week.

Happy golfing and bowling!

Cheers

Good day All,

I was amazed at how the youngsters performed this weekend at the EGU Open. Some of these guys can hit the ball miles and straight. Jayden made hole-in-one in the morning 18, and in the afternoon almost again, leaving it less than a foot from the hole. Well done to Hein and Lingum, who made the cut to play on the Sunday.

The course treatment is done, so let’s hope the rain falls on Thursday as predicted. It is going to take a week or two for the sand to settle in, then the greens are going to be awesome for the summer.

Good luck for those who are playing this weekend. Don’t let the word Medal play with your minds, it is just a game enjoy it.

Keep it on the fairways.

On Wednesday we had a Betterball competition. Doing enough was Nick vd Westhuizen and Dirk Roos on a steady 42pts. Second place on a count out went to Brian Josselsohn and Frank Booth on 41pts, followed by Willie Jacobs and Hennie Breed in third place also on 41pts.

Reading Country Club had the opportunity to host the prestigious Ekurhuleni Open Stroke Play Championships this past weekend (Friday 4th October to Sunday 6th October).

Thank you to all the members for offering up their regular weekend games for this event. I am confident that the club will benefit even more from events like this in the future.

Thank you to Sean and his staff for the awesome course conditions and to the Pro Shop and Clubhouse staff for providing excellent service!

WELCOME to the new season. Here’s hoping that the 2019/2020 season brings you all you hope to achieve on the bowling greens, as well as in and around our beautiful club. There is, of course, that constant wish for gentle, soaking rains that will see our bowling greens flourish.

Coming up very soon is Saturday League which commences on Saturday 26th October 2019. Good luck and good bowling to all our teams. We hope you do as well as last year or even better.

The day before, Friday 25th October 2019 the Old Mutual Corporate Day will be hosted by Reading with 120 bowlers filling our greens. Apart from the fact that these days are great fun for all the participants, they inevitably produce new bowlers who are very quickly “hooked” by this game. An added bonus would be if these potential new bowlers enjoyed our greens and facilities so much, they became new members of Reading.

Just a gentle reminder to all our bowlers to read your notice boards.

See you in the sun,
Sandra

There is something exquisite about finding the sweet spot with an iron. Everything feels so perfect in that moment.

Achieving that moment requires, returning the clubface square to the target with the sole square to the turf. That’s very difficult if the lie angle / shaft length combination is wrong for you.

Over 80% of golfers play with equipment that makes it more difficult to experience the perfect iron shot. You can change your experience. You can make more magic.

You can do this
Let’s get your irons checked. Let’s help you make sure you have a setup that makes it easier to create more magical moments. Come and see us. Call us, or

Consistently better

From the top, which part of your body initiates the downswing? Many get into a good position at the top, but then allow the
downswing to start with their arms or even hands.

This is a good position. A downswing started
with the arms.

You want accuracy and consistency of ball strike with approach shots. That is much, much easier to achieve if the large muscles control your first movement back to the ball.

Easy to say, harder to do
Male golfers especially are conditioned to try and hit the ball with their arms and hands. I want all of you to take an #8 iron, get out on the range, hit balls, and to try and quieten your arms and hands. Try consciously hitting the ball with your “body” rotation. Notice how much more solid you can strike the ball. Practise this.
