Dear fellow golfer, There have been some unfortunate miscommunications, as well as some misconceptions, relating to the implementation requirements of the World Handicap System. In simple terms, while preferred lies are discouraged, a club may implement preferred lies if they have good reason to do so. In our country, this could happen quite frequently, especially in some of our outlying areas, or where dry and hot weather conditions play such a big role. So, in a nutshell, a club can have preferred lies but it should not appear as a permanent fixture on their score card. Another point to correct is that a Dale Hayes newsletter recently stated that if a player completes a round on a course that has preferred lies, the score will not count for handicapping purposes. This is in fact incorrect. The score will count when the guidelines have been adhered to. Lastly, a number of clubs have asked if they MUST adopt the new stroking changes, worried that if they don’t they will be disaffiliated. This is not the case. Clubs will not be disaffiliated, but they are strongly encouraged to adopt the new stroking as it ties into the requirements as outlined by the USGA and R&A Rules of Handicapping. The USGA and R&A Rules of Handicapping, as adopted for the country specific selections made by GolfRSA, will be published as soon as it is available from the WHS Committee. The target date for this publication is by the end of November. Grant Hepburn CEO - GolfRSA Invite a friend Bridging the gap We're excited about the new developments underway. | New irons now? | | | | You have less than an inch and just 0.0005 seconds to influence what is going to happen with your golf ball. | | | | | | There are characteristics of your irons that can make it much harder to make this fraction of a second count. We need to tick these off. Get the lie angle or shaft length wrong, and, on contact with the turf, the face will IMMEDIATELY TWIST. | | | | | | Grip size too thick, you’ll struggle to rotate the clubface and leave it open. Grip size too thin, you’ll get too handsy and close the face. | | | The shaft is too stiff, and you won’t unload the club leaving the face open at impact. Too much flex and the clubface will get ahead, and the face will try to close too quickly. | | | | Finally, how much offset does the face have? Too much and the face will be open. Too little, and you will be closed. | | | | Be your best ever | Technology is changing the game. Too many lose out because they don’t spend the time to get fitted.
