HOLLOW-TINING
Hollow-tining plays a very important role of keeping the greens in the best condition during the year and preventing unwanted diseases on the greens. Clubs will generally hollow-tine once a year and this will normally happen in January or February in South Africa. It is important to schedule the hollow-tining before the growing season ends; leaving it to late will take much longer for the greens to recover. The normal recovery time is between 2-3 weeks for the holes to fully close and get the
putting surface as smooth as possible.
What is Hollow-tining?
It is the physical removal of cores of the turf from the playing surface. The tines used can be between 13-16mm in diameter and the depths may vary.
Process for hollow-tining is as follow:
• The hollow-tining machine will remove the cores with the tines.
• After the cores have been removed, they will be swept off the putting surface.
• The green will then immediately be covered with sand.
• From time-to-time a fertiliser will be added as well to speed up the recovery process, but will also provide nutrients to the roots.
• Water will be applied to cool the surface down and to ensure the holes are filled with sand.
Why do we Hollow-tine?
With the amount of traffic on the greens during the year, the ground will become compacted and hard. The hard surface makes drainage less efficient and the roots are prevented from absorbing oxygen. Hollow-tining allows the compacted ground to expand, making it easier for air and moisture to be absorbed. One of the biggest reasons for hollow-tining is to prevent thatch (a layer of grass stems, roots and debris that settle and accumulate over time) on the greens as thatch does hold a lot of
water that should be going to the roots and should not be trapped by the thatch.
