MEMBERS AND GUESTS
It is important to keep members and guests informed as we see the second wave of Covid-19 cases rising and impacting on all households and businesses. The Club has not been unaffected as we have received numerous reports from members about positive cases, after self-isolating. We have also seen positive cases amongst the staff during this last period, which was dealt with, as per the Covid-19 regulations, and Club policy. The Club will continue to put all measures in place to sanitize the Club, but we need each and every member, guest and staff member to do their part. Please wear masks at all times when walking through the Club, especially in halfway house before you dish up. Masks may only be removed once you are seated or on the tee.

Dear Member,

THE CLUB

Only a year ago articles were flying all over the place about golf being a dying sport and all of a sudden golf is making a 360-degree turn as the sport of choice. The increase in rounds is not only a Randpark trend, even though the new membership model is proving to be a great success, but a positive trend of increasing rounds is showing at all clubs in South Africa and around the world.

This is great but we can also not become complaisant about the need to make this sport more sustainable. There are some interesting articles being shared around the boom of golf, due to the pandemic, the new appreciation for green spaces all around us, and the importance of how we think about golf and the club industry moving forward.

The sustainability of Randpark has been at the forefront of the club's strategic plan for many years and we have certainly made great progress, but we still need to face many challenges before we get to the point where we can celebrate. The impact of Covid-19 has set us back and we must realign our plan to move forward. All areas of the operation are currently being assessed and changes will be implemented to ensure we get back on track.

Randpark continues to be seen as a trend-setting club, in many ways, but the value members receive has most certainly drawn more new members to the club in the past year than ever before:

Overall great value for money and a unique offering to Randpark members. There is one thing that we are missing at the moment (due to restrictions) and it is most probably the biggest drawing card and ads the most value to your membership. It is without a doubt the atmosphere! The comradery and friendship that is created, and enjoyed, when members get together after a round of golf is one of our biggest differentiators of any club in South Africa and it is something we can truly be proud of.

Happy golfing,
Francois

We always encourage communication between our members and the Club. If you have any comments or questions, please don’t hesitate to either contact our CEO, Francois Swart at ceo@randpark.co.za or our Club Captain, Derek McGowan at captainslog@randpark.co.za.

SOUTH AFRICAN STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

We are only 3 days away from hosting the South African Stroke Play Championship on our Championship course Firethorn. Roger and his team have really dedicated a lot of time to get the course in pristine condition for next week, but it is still up to each and every one of us to ensure we look after our beautiful courses. We have communicated in the previous newsletter that the responsibility lies with all golfers playing on our courses and we would like to encourage all members to continue to play their part.

Christian MacGregor and Ryan Wingrove will be participating in the Championship next week and we would like to wish both of them the very best!

FLEET OF GOLF CARTS

As we previously mentioned in the newsletter our fleet of golf carts have been effected by the shortages of parts from our suppliers. Click here to view a letter from Yamaha in this regard and the problems they are facing when it comes to getting stock for golf carts. Currently we do have a lot of carts that are not operating due to this dilemma but we are in the process of getting additional carts in to assist with the current situation. Please note that some of the carts within our fleet does not have GPS units installed and we can’t guarantee that if you book a cart that a GPS unit will be on the cart.

We would like to take this opportunity again to remind our members that our golf carts are limited so please ensure you book your cart when making your bookings.

HANDICAP NEWS

In the December HNA newsletter they mentioned how important it is to play off the correct handicap and also some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to entering scores and the symbols that might appear next to your handicap index.

Entering scores – All scores must be submitted within 24 hours after the completion of the round. Failing to do so will result in a penalty round against the player’s profile. If a player is playing two days in a row they must enter their score before 21h00 – failure to do so could mean that the player can play off the incorrect handicap on the next day and could lead to disqualification.

If a player does enter the incorrect score, this excludes a penalty round, they can contact the golf department and we will be able to correct the scores.

Members would have noticed that a symbol might be next to your handicap index or within your score history, mostly a “S” or a “H”, below is the breakdown of the symbols and what they represent.

*This was copied from the HNA December Newsletter

What is my Low Handicap Index (LI)? - You can find your Low Handicap Index on the left-hand corner of the landing page of the HNA Handicap System App or website. Essentially, this is the lowest HI you have achieved over a rolling 365-day period. The Low HI is determined after a player has submitted 20 scores and is used as the basis for determining the maximum that your HI can increase over a period of 365 days (this maximum is 5).
In order to slow down the rate of an HI increase, or to put a cap on the increase, there are two mechanisms used in the WHS system:

Soft Cap (S): This is a mechanism that has been introduced to prevent a player’s Handicap Index from increasing too rapidly. Should the player submit a score that would see his/her Handicap Index increase by more than three strokes above their Low HI, the Soft Cap will kick in – limiting the increase above 3 by 50%.
Hard Cap (H): This is another mechanism that will limit by how much a player’s Handicap Index can increase. Kicking in after the application of the Soft Cap, the Hard Cap is an upper limit that prevents a player’s Handicap Index from increasing to more than five strokes greater than their Low Handicap Index.
It is important to note that there is no limit on the amount by which a player’s Handicap Index can decrease.

We will be having a summer apparel sale in the golf shop from the 1st – 7th of February. All specials will be displayed in the shop from Monday, the 1st of February. Looking forward to seeing you! Don’t miss out.

With brands releasing new equipment in the next few weeks, we have decided to get them all together to let you try the products for yourself. We will be at Randpark Club’s Driving Range on Friday, the 5th of March from 1pm to 7pm. No need to book, just pitch and enjoy your favourite brand’s clubs. We are excited to see you there! Please note that this event is dependent on COVID regulations being eased a bit before the date.

From a week of + 30°C days we are now experiencing cool overcast days with bouts of rain due to effects of Cyclone Eloise, Sunday night saw strong winds causing a lot of mess with broken branches and leaves spread through the course. We also had a request from some senior golfers to add some fairway at the approach of the 17th on Bushwillow. This has been mowed in but will take a little time to settle.

The willow tree guarding the green on the 16th of Bushwillow was growing too much into the fairway and impeding on playability and vision of the green. We have lifted the lower branches to open up the hole a bit more and get a little more sunlight into the fairway.
