A Tribute from the Club

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of two of our long standing members.
Gavin Wahl was a member of the Club for 57 years.
Anthony Knowles was a member of the Club for 20 years.
We extend our sincere condolences and sympathies to both the families and friends.

The Club

It has been a difficult week, as we once again find ourselves adjusting to the lockdown restrictions. What is quite interesting is to see how much easier it has become for everyone to adapt to these restrictions, despite how frustrating it may be. Unfortunately we have also been dealing with incidents where members are not adhering to the rules, by not wearing masks in halfway or gathering at the tee. We appeal to members to please adhere to the rules out of respect for fellow members and the employees. The club cannot condone this and will deal with these incidents as a very serious transgression of the rules.

The impact of closing the clubhouse is serious and we have been hard at work looking at all aspects of the operation, once again, to ensure that we will get through this period, and possibly longer. We appreciate the ongoing support from members on the course and with buying take-aways. You can look forward to a few new ideas coming out from the team, which includes our frozen food range, which will be based on all your club favourites. You can buy a few trays of already prepared meals, freeze it and just warm it up for the family. We are also offering a Sunday lunch take away option. This was a big hit before and is ideal for a lazy Winter Sunday.

We know that members have gone above and beyond to support our staff since the first lockdown but we are once again asking for donations towards the Unity fund, no matter how small. Our F&B staff will be severely impacted during this period and we are looking at supporting them in every way possible. Thank you to the members who have already donated funds to the Unity fund.

We kindly request all league players to take note of the updated league fixtures and please add the dates to your dairy as we need all our players’ commitment at the end of the year.

We have been focusing on our out of play areas over the last few weeks. The area right of the 17th hole on Firethorn has been completed. We spent last week on the natural koppie on the 10th hole and the back right of the 4th green on Firethorn. Over the years, invader plants, especially Chinese Privets, Syringa and Honey Locust have invaded these areas. Eventually, they will crowd out the natural indigenous vegetation in these koppies and we will lose this very important habitat on our golf course. There are some beautiful indigenous trees in these koppies dominated by White Stinkwood, there are also Wild Olives, Buffalo Thorns, Blue Guarri and Firethorns. We have removed the invader plants and used a herbicide that is painted onto the cut stump to make sure they don’t grow back. There is obviously a seed bank of invader trees and these areas will have to be managed to ensure that they don’t get taken over. Visually, these areas are now very open so finding an errant golf ball will be far easier although the recovery shot may not be.

We have also had some drainage issues on the 3rd hole on Bushwillow with a blockage on the left side of the fairway and water running through the sloot, this has been repaired. Fortunately, the sewage leak that we experienced last week on the 14th hole on Bushwillow was repaired quickly by the municipality.

Construction on the bridge on the 8th hole on Bushwillow is underway, the pilings are currently being installed. The new temporary tee is in play in front of the dam making it a very short par 3 of about 60 meters.  It is still a tricky little hole with some precision and feel required with the tee shot.
