Dear Member,

The Club

A Tribute from the Club

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing of Beverley Reid on Saturday morning. Bev was a long-standing employee of Randpark Club, and well known by a lot of members.

It is also with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mike Zubrinic last Sunday. Mike was a member of Randpark Club for 25 years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends through these difficult times.

The week ahead temperature looks great, with highs reaching 27/28 degrees. This will be a welcome change from the cold weekend, and it will most certainly show on our courses, as we can already see the green popping.

There is a lot going on this week all around the Club:
1. We will be adding a rubber walkway on the 8th bridge Bushwillow to ensure walkers don’t slip. This should be completed today.
2. We will be re-surfacing the rubber walkway at the main entrance, which has been looking shabby.
3. A new golf shop show floor will be installed this week, as communicated in last week’s newsletter.
4. Bunkers are being topped up on both courses, which will take most of the week.
5. Tee boxes are being fertilised on Bushwillow.
6. We are moving a few signs around on the starting holes to manage traffic, especially the 10th on Firethorn.
7. The GolfRSA team will be at the Club today to re-look the current slope rating, for some potential changes.

The annual CGGU and Randpark Foursomes took place on Sunday. It was a very chilly start to the day, with temperatures only reaching 1 degree, and it only warmed up later during the morning. We had a total of 116 players in the field, and for the first time in the history of the event, we had ladies participating in the event as well. We had a mixture of players in the field, from young to old, from normal weekend golfers to Central Gauteng’s Inter-Provincial players. It surely was a well-supported event, and we would like to thank our members who made the day so special.

It was a very early start for the 36-hole Strokeplay event, and the first brave golfers got the field started at 06h40. It was cold, it was windy, but still, the players were in high spirit for the event. The field was broken up into two divisions; A-Division (Combined CH of 10.0 and less) and B-Division (Combined CH of 10.5 and above), and the format for both divisions were Strokeplay. Foursomes is always a fun event; as I normally mention to players, it can either make or break a few friendships as you play alternative shots on each hole. Each team must determine before the start of the round the order of play, where one partner must start on odd holes and the other partner must start on even holes.

As the teams started finishing their first 18-holes, it was clear to see that the cold weather made scoring very difficult. In the A-Division Central Gauteng Mid-Am players, Travis Fraser and Clive Palm only had a one-stroke lead after opening with a level par 72. They were closely followed by CGGU Open IPT’s squad members, Conner Mackenzie and Simon du Plooy on 73. Two teams posted opening rounds of 74; Matthew Adams and Michael Armstrong as well as Darren Quirk and Gregory Jacobs. In the B-Division, the leader-board was just as close. Tyrone Davidson and Darren Grobler posted an opening round of 88, and three teams, 1 – Timothy Tutt and Ryan van Schalkwyk, 2 – Mzwandile Mahlangu and Thabiso Selai and 3 – R. Neilsen van Reizig and Michael Pienaar, all finished on 89 after the first 18-holes.

Players had a quick stop after 18-holes, and the second round got underway at 11h20. The field started off on time with no delays and the warmer weather made conditions a little bit easier for the second round. For your normal weekend golfer, playing 36-holes in one day is always a challenge, not just physically, but also on the mental part of the game. Luckily, carts were allowed for the event, which made it a little bit easier for the players.

The pace of play was very well-managed by all players, considering that teams played as 3-balls (6 players in total). We managed to record all the scores by 17h00, and the winners could be determined after all the scores were submitted.

In the B- Division 18-hole leaders, Tyrone Davidson and Darren Grobler followed up their opening round of 88 by a great 87 (175 total) to win the B-Division Gross by 3 shots. Runners-up Conal Levin and Ethan Searle finished with a great closing round of 80 to finish on a total of 178. Mzwandile Mahlangu and Thabiso Selai finished strong, and ended up in third place in the B-Division with a total of 179. Well done to all the winners.

In the A-Division 18-hole leaders, Travis Fraser and Clive Palm kept their nerves and closed with a great 1-under par 71 to finish on a total of 143, two shots clear of runners-up Simon du Plooy and Conner Mackenzie, who finished on a total of 145 for the 36-holes. Randpark’s James Cleasby and Christian MacGregor finished 3rd after a great closing round of 72 to give them a 36-hole total of 148.

We may still look like the new kid on the block, calling the shots by inviting you to partake in something other than a great round of golf …

As important as it is to play a round of golf with the members of Randpark Club, is how important the environment is to us; now that’s very important!

123mds, an Authorised Partner of Kyocera Document Solutions South Africa, is participating in the Kyocera Recycling Programme extended to all Kyocera Partners.

123mds invites all Randpark Club members, together with Carbon Footprint Recycling, to help battle against e-waste by disposing of empty laser and copier toner cartridges, ink cartridges, and waste toner bottles in the proper manner.

The idea was borne out of the need to keep hazardous materials out of landfill sites. Printer cartridges in their decomposed state are hazardous.

Carbon Footprint Recycling creates concrete-based products such as dustbins, vegetable planters and benches out of the recycled cartridges.

Recycling printer cartridges is the right thing to do and there are other benefits, such as job creation and reducing waste that is sent to landfills.

Some interesting facts:
Hundreds of thousands of cartridges are sold into the market every month and less than 20% of these are recycled.
An average of 1,3kg is added to the landfill each time a laser cartridge is thrown away.
It takes 3,8 litres of oil to make a laser printer cartridge.
Put all the cartridges sold in one year end-to-end and it would circumnavigate the earth 3 times!

Recycle your printer cartridges with 123mds, Kyocera and Carbon Footprint Recycling by:
Bringing your empty cartridges to the Club and putting them in the collection bin in the main reception area.
Contact us via email at carmen@123mds.co.za, or alternatively, follow the link www.cfafrica.co.za for more information on this recycling programme.
