Greetings esteemed affiliated members,

We may not be able to look back on the first quarter of the year because it came and went like a lightning bolt, but there are some great events to reflect on.

 Senior Section

WP Masters

This year's WPG Senior Masters Championship took place at Bellville Golf Club on Sunday, 20 March 2022 and Monday, 21 March 2022 (36-hole stroke play format).

The golf course played true and fast, with the greens attracting the most attention and compliments from the players.

There were 51 players competing for the Masters Trophy.

Taking the honours with a gross score of 142 (-2), Hennie Walters (Bellville) put on a superb display of quality golf. In second place was Ralph Fransman (Somerset West) with a score of 145 (+1), followed by Craig Poulton (KDM) with a score of 146 (+2).

We are grateful for the support we have received from Stellenbosch Vineyards, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages and Subtropico.

We are proud of the WPG Senior Golf Division's depth.

 Women’s Tournaments

WP Women’s Amateur Championship

This year's WPG Women's Amateur Championship was held at Westlake Golf Club from Sunday, 27 March 2022 - Tuesday, 29 March 2022.

The golf course was in great condition, with the greens running true and fast. Despite glorious weather on the first two days with little to no wind, Westlake showed its true colors on Tuesday morning with persistent rain and wind in the final day of matchplay.

We witnessed a thrilling 8-hole play-off between Gabrielle Venter, (Bloemfontein) and Megan Streicher, (Swellendam), after they both finished with one under par after the 36-hole stroke play. However, the honour of lifting the Edith Bowie Cup ultimately went to Gabrielle Venter.

The silver division was won by Ame Van Der Merwe (Zwartkop) with a gross of 166, followed by Kim Albertus (Atlantic Beach Links) with a gross of 176.

In our 2022 Bronze division Stroke Play, Jane Wollaston was crowned the winner with a gross of 93. Runner-up Gail Thane came in at 94, and finishing third Liz Usher came in at 95.

 Junior Tournaments

The Durbanville Junior Championship demonstrated the depth of junior golf in Western Province despite some windy conditions. Of the top 15 players, all had gross scores of at least 75 and better.

Pearce Lewin, (16 years old), from Steenberg Golf Club, put in a performance that ranks among the best at a WP Junior Golf event. He shot 65, which included seven birdies, an eagle, and two bogeys. Tyan Snyder's 64 in the second round of the WP Junior Championship, at the Strand in 2019, holds the record in recent years!

Pearce shot a breath-taking 30 strokes on the 1st nine, including four birdies and an eagle at the sixth hole. The second nine began with a stutter, with drops at the par 5 11th and the par 3 12th, but three birdies on the last three holes saw him return that 65. Pearce's last victory came at the 2021 Strand Junior Championship.

Currently ranked 3rd in the South African U/19 Junior rankings, Jack Buchanan (Milnerton) fired a round of 70 with 3 birdies, an eagle, and 3 bogeys. Jan Stals van Rooyen (Royal Cape) continued his recent fine form by matching Jack's 70. It was quite interesting to note that each of the top 3 finishers eagled the 455-metre par 5 6th hole!

Other noteworthy scores included 71s by Liam Adonis (Atlantis) and Philco Venter (Bellville). Both Heinrich Haasbroek (Durbanville) and Michael Newton (Royal Cape) finished on level par. Adonis Liam recently became the club champion at Atlantis Golf Club.

The other noteworthy results were Jean-Guido Tobias (Somerset West), with a gross score of 79, and Jethon Williams (Atlantis), who scored 40 points in the C division. The U13s was as usual a tightly fought affair with Arman Patel (Steenberg) taking the U13A title on a gross score of 77 (counting out Victor Venter on the same score) whilst the U13B winner was 11-year-old Joel Neethling (Rondebosch) on 37 points (counting out Codi Ruiters on the same score).

WP Junior Golf's next event will be the popular Erinvale Junior Championship on Sunday, 1st May.

Qualifiers thus far for the WP Junior Golf 2022 Championship Tour Final are namely:
Jack Buchanan – Parow Junior Championship (74)
Craig Jacobs – Kuils River (69)
Jan Stals van Rooyen- Bellville (73)
Jungwi Lee – King David Mowbray (71)
Pearce Lewin – Durbanville (65)
